In the interest of full disclosure, I'll be honest that I don't know a whole lot about Drake's Brewing. I've only had two of their beers, the Denogginizer and the Aroma Coma. Both were fantastic, but I haven't had exposure to the rest of their lineup. This is why I am excited to welcome Drakes's Brewing to Beer Belly on Saturday, April 27. Drake's opened its doors in 1989 just south of the Oakland International Airport in gritty, industrial San Leandro. A nondescript blue warehouse shelters a 20 bbl brewhouse, fermenters, and a bottling line. This old school craft brewery is led by owners John Martin and Roy Krikorian. Brewing is handled by lead brewer Alexandra Nowell. While it may strike you as unique to have a female brewer, women have been brewing beer since beer was invented. In ancient Egypt and Babylon, women were the primary brewers. From Meg Gill, of L.A.'s own Golden Road Brewing, to Bailey Spaulding and Robyn Virball of Nashville based Jackalope Brewing Co., women have been returning to the brewhouse in an otherwise male dominated suds world.
Here's the tap list for the event:
- Nitro Dry Stout
- Brette Davis Eyes (sour blonde)
- Drakonic cuvée (Bourbon barrel Drakonic, blended with porter and barleywine)
- Scorched Rye (Rye barrel smoked imperial stout)
- Something Mild (Mosaic single hop mild)
Hop you can join us!
